Gandhi An Autobiography: The Story of My Experiments With Truth
Gandhi An Autobiography: The Story of My Experiments With Truth
Author: M.K. Gandhi Language: English File Format: PDF
Book Overview: Gandhi's nonviolent struggles in South Africa and India had already brought him to such a level of notoriety, adulation, and controversy that when asked to write an autobiography midway through his career, he took it as an opportunity to explain himself. Although accepting of his status as a great innovator in the struggle against racism, violence, and, just then, colonialism, Gandhi feared that enthusiasm for his ideas tended to exceed a deeper understanding. He says that he was after truth rooted in devotion to God and attributed the turning points, successes, and challenges in his life to the will of God. His attempts to get closer to this divine power led him to seek purity through simple living, dietary practices (he called himself a fruitarian), celibacy, and ahimsa, a life without violence. It is in this sense that he calls his book The Story of My Experiments with Truth, offering it also as a reference for those who would follow in his footsteps. A reader expecting a complete accounting of his actions, however, will be sorely disappointed.

By Louisa May Alcott Little Women is a novel by Louisa May Alcott published on September 30, 1868, concerning the lives and loves of four sisters growing up during the American Civil War. It was based on Alcott's own experiences as a child in Concord, Massachusetts. After much demand, Louisa May Alcott wrote a sequel, Good Wives, which was published in 1869 and is often published together with Little Women as if it were a single work. Good Wives picks up three years after the events in the last chapter of Little Women ("Aunt March Settles The Question"), and includes characters and events often felt by fans to be essential to the Little Women story.
Alcott later wrote Little Men and Jo's Boys and How They Turned Out, which followed the lives of the girls' children.

As A Man Thinketh Above Life's Turmoil Byways to Blessedness The Path of Prosperity The Way of Peace The Reign Of Law
James Allen is a literary mystery man. His inspirational writings have influenced millions for good. Yet today he remains almost unknown...... None of his nineteen books give a clue to his life other than to mention his place of residence - Ilfracombe, England. His name cannot be found in a major reference work. Not even the Library of Congress or the British Museum has much to say about him. Who was this man who believed in the power of thought to bring fame, fortune and happiness? Or did he, as Henry David Thoreau says, hear a different drummer?...... James Allen never gained fame or fortune. That much is true. His was a quiet, unrewarded genius. He seldom made enough money from his writings to cover expenses.
Allen was born in Leicester, Central England, November 28, 1864. The family business failed within a few years, and in 1879 his father left for America in an effort to recoup his losses. The elder Allen had hoped to settle in the United States, but was robbed and murdered before he could send for his family.
The financial crisis that resulted forced James to leave school at fifteen. He eventually became a private secretary, a position that would be called administrative assistant today. He worked in this capacity for several British manufacturers until 1902, when he decided to devote all his time to writing.
Unfortunately, Allen's literary career was short, lasting only nine years, until his death in 1912. During that period he wrote nineteen books, a rich outpouring of ideas that have lived on to inspire later generations.
Soon after finishing his first book, From Poverty To Power, Allen moved to Ilfracombe, on England's southwest coast. The little resort town with its seafront Victorian hotels and its rolling hills and winding lanes offered him the quiet atmosphere he needed to pursue his philosophical studies.

Andrew Loomis is one of those rare, gifted artists who can articulate as clearly and truthfully using words as he could with lines. Using very simple tools to define the structure of the human body, essentially the skeleton as the foundation, he teaches how fantastically easy it is to draw the human body from any angle, in any action, and of any type. I wish there were 10 stars.
Having stood the test of time, it was first published in the 30's, this book teaches you all that is there to figure drawing.
This is not one of those 'feel good' books that teaches you to do 'yet another thing'. This is a grand text. absolutely dedicated work, you can see the earnestness in Loomis' anxious words about getting across the details to the reader.
Kimon's 'Natural Way to Draw' is a classic in a different way, where he asks us to discover almost everything. Loomis gives us the crutches. I think a combination of these two approaches can be terrific. thats what I am finding out.
It has been very fullfilling , since I can pick up the artifacts of drawing the figure, and infact drawing anything for that matter, Loomis will lead you to explore and expand, the techniques are amazingly simple, yet absolutely powerful.
He reiterates to see the structure beneath anything, the skeleton, and how it aids us in construction.

A Platform-Centric Approach to System-on-Chip (SOC) Design
Publisher: Springer Number Of Pages: 205 Publication Date: 2004-12-15 File Type: PDF
Book Review: The platform-centric SoC method is aimed at the design of today’s SoC systems with emphasis on real-time, embedded systems. The approach provides a guideline and an SoC design environment that promotes an integration of state-of-the-art tools and techniques necessary for the development of the systems. It renders a new and better perspective towards co-design approaches, while also raising a level of design abstraction. Because the configurable platform objects are designed off-cycle, they contribute to a general improvement in development time. By incorporating their usage, the overall method strikes a balance between total design flexibility and minimal time-to-market.
In Chapter 1, challenges in the co-design of SoCs are introduced. The chapter briefly describes the technical challenges facing system developers and introduces a proposed solution to the problem. The remainder of this book presents a more thorough examination on the problem and the proposed approach.
Chapter 2 describes the proposed platform-centric SoC design method in detail. It illustrates the design flow and discusses each main step in the design process. Definition of a platform as originally defined by Sabbagh [96], as well as the platform-based and platform-centric design approaches, are presented. The chapter concludes by comparing the proposed approach with previous related work.
Chapter 3 lays out the technological background for the proposed SoC design method. Whereas the platform technology is discussed in Chapter 2, this chapter gives an overview of the other two fundamental technologies: the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and the Extensible Markup Language (XML). The chapter begins with an introduction to UML as a modeling tool very well perceived within the software engineering community. It is followed by a discussion on an attempt by the Object Management Group (OMG) to empower UML for the development of real-time embedded software – an effort which will eventually culminate in a design framework known as the UML Profile for Schedulability, Performance, and Time Specification [29]. Thereafter, an overview of XML and a few other related internet technologies ensue.
Chapter 4 outlines the structure of the library of platform objects (LPO), as well as furnishes a comprehensive guideline and requirements specification that a platform object must possess in order to be scalable and compatible with the proposed approach. Essential elements for each platform object, e.g. architecture blueprint, XML-based self-described modules, platform managing tool, etc., are also discussed in detail.
Chapter 5 provides a detailed treatment of UML extensions for the development of real-time embedded systems. The chapter starts with a layout of the Co-design Modeling Framework (CMF) hierarchy that encompasses five other sub-profiles – the generic utility profile (PCUprofile), the Exception Modeling profile (EMprofile), the Interrupt Modeling profile (IMprofile), the Synthesizable Hardware Description Language profile (SHDLprofile), and the Architecture Blueprint profile (ABprofile). Each of these profiles furnishes a design framework that is specifically tailored for the proposed approach, and may be able to meet with the challenges posed by the design and test of real-time embedded SoC-based systems. The chapter, then, proceeds to discuss the domain concept for each sub-profile, followed by the description of the corresponding stereotypes.
Chapter 6 applies the platform-centric SoC design method, using the CMF profile in UML, to the development of a simplified digital camera system so as to demonstrate the use and the robustness of the proposed approach. Specifically, the NiOS development board is used to mimic the digital camera system where raw image data are read from a charge-coupled device (CCD), and then JPEG encoded and stored into memory. The chapter begins with an overview of the Altera’s NiOS system, followed by the actual system development process that explicitly demonstrates the use of the proposed approach. A quantitative evaluation is then presented that compares the development cost of the proposed platform-centric SoC design method against some alternative approaches using cost estimation models and tools.
Chapter 7 concludes the book with a summary and a discussion of future directions for this effort on platform-based design.
The first full-length biography of Hermann Goring, Hitler's partner, alter ego, and chosen successor. Includes 23 pages of photos, some from the Goring family album, and diaries and letters that disclose the nature of Goring's death.
This is an account of the world according to Hilary, her view of her life as First Lady of the U.S.A. and wife to an incorrigible womanising President. She also covers her childhood and coming of age during the sixties. The sixties, as anyone who grew up then will remember, was a time of turbulent change with the Vietnam War protests and the growing Women’s Liberation Movement setting campuses in turmoil throughout the States. We can follow her progress from her years of student activism to her years as one of the most controversial First Ladies America has had.
Readers will be disappointed if they are expecting gory details of what ‘Hil said to Bill’ when she found he had lied and lied about his affair with Monica Lewinsky. It is dealt with, but without emotion and this would seem to be why people find Hilary cold and unfeeling – she doesn’t bleed in public. She humorously describes the pitfalls of balancing being a wife, mother and a very political First Lady in the face of prurient Press interest. She held Jacqueline Kennedy and Eleanor Roosevelt, two equally formidable ladies, as her role models in creating her own idea of being a First Lady.
This book covers Hilary’s role in the internal politics of the U.S. as well as her travels abroad and her meetings with the great and the good from all over the world and from all walks of life, but in a documentary fashion rather than as a personal recollection. Overall this is an interesting book, well written but perhaps a bit over-edited as one would expect from such a self-controlled intelligent lady.
Former President William Jefferson Clinton's hotly anticipated 957-page doorstop of a memoir is much like its author-charismatic, longwinded, and, many might say, deeply flawed. The first Democratic president to be elected to a second term since FDR in 1936, Clinton has lived what is by any account an eventful, inspiring life. As explained in early passages notable for their frankness and humanity, Clinton, born to humble Arkansas roots, never knew his father. William Jefferson Blythe was killed in an automobile accident just months before his son's birth. Clinton adored his mother, Virginia, a nurse with a large, loving family and a harmless penchant for the racetrack. Difficulties began when Virginia married Roger Clinton, who struggled with alcohol and a violent temper. A turbulent home life and the vagaries of a segregated South, however, only pushed the gregarious Clinton to achieve. He became interested in politics at an early age. He wrote, debated, played the saxophone, and eventually made it to Georgetown and Oxford universities, a law practice, then to Little Rock and the governor's mansion, and eventually to the White House. Clinton's administration was equally dramatic. Domestically, he fought to balance the federal budget, presided over a government shutdown, and beat back a conservative cultural backlash. Diplomatically, Clinton skirmished with a bellicose Saddam Hussein, ended a genocidal crisis in Bosnia, accelerated the Mideast peace process until its eventual collapse, and began to deal with the budding threat posed by Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda. To top that off, he left office in 2000 amid the bizarre Bush/Gore electoral crisis. Of course, what Clinton is also remembered for are the scandals that plagued his efforts. Beginning with Gennifer Flowers in the 1992 campaign, to Whitewater, Travelgate, the FBI file scandal, Paula Jones and ultimately the Monica Lewinsky affair that led to his historic impeachment, Clinton endured what then First Lady Hillary Clinton termed a "vast right-wing conspiracy" to push him from office. The most interesting passages of Clinton's memoir reveal a simmering, deep animosity toward special prosecutor Ken Starr. Clinton defiantly blisters Starr as an unethical, overreaching partisan who illegally leaked details of his investigations to the press; exceeded his authority; humiliated, bankrupted and jailed innocent people for not playing ball; and served only to ring up huge legal bills for the Clintons, their staff and supporters. Certainly, Clinton's memoir has the raw material for a blockbuster book. But the sheer deluge of information is mind-numbing. Rather than expose the hurricane's eye of a remarkable life and an eventful presidency, the book instead blurs into an unrelenting blizzard of names, dates, campaigns, speeches, events, handshakes, tangential observations, memories, meetings, cities and towns, and anecdotes. The result is a narrative that obscures any meaningful measure of Clinton's true character and values. Save for his strong feelings about Starr, Clinton offers only brief personal assessments of the colorful personalities with whom he crossed paths, including his wife, Hillary Clinton, Al Gore and James Carville, opponents like George Bush, Bob Dole and Ross Perot, or world leaders such as Boris Yeltsin, and Yasser Arafat. Monica Lewinsky also escapes any meaningful scrutiny. Most frustratingly, Clinton, while admitting mistakes, offers no deep personal introspection. In an excerpt from a high school essay, Clinton wrote that he was a "living paradox," who "detests selfishness but sees it in the mirror everyday." That passage marks the most insightful stroke of self-analysis in the book. Yet while lacking immediacy, the book nevertheless manages a certain gravitas, if only for being a painstakingly thorough act of recollection. Given the fevered "tell-all" anticipation surrounding the book's publication, however, it is certain to disappoint many readers even as it sells an astonishing number of copies. Some of that disappointment, however, was inevitable. After all, My Life is a presidential memoir, a historically self-serving category of autobiography alone unto itself and very much an extension of presidential politics--a profession that is never "tell-all." Even more tricky, Clinton's wife, Hillary, now the junior Senator from New York, is very much still in politics. When matched against other presidential memoirs, though, Clinton's scores favorably, certainly exceeding the flaccid efforts of his most recent predecessors, Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush. Still, Clinton, a popular, gifted orator with a clear mastery of public policy, has missed, or, perhaps, passed on, a golden opportunity to offer a truly resonant portrait of his embattled presidency or an enduring political vision.
