Disciples of All Nations: Pillars of World Christianity
Lamin O. Sanneh, "Disciples of All Nations: Pillars of World Christianity" Oxford University Press (2008) | English | ISBN 0195189612 | 389 pages | PDF | 3.77 MB
Long the dominant religion of the West, Christianity is now rapidly becoming the principal faith in much of the postcolonial world--a development that marks a momentous shift in the religion's very center of gravity. In this eye-opening book, Lamin Sanneh examines the roots of this "post-Western awakening" and the unparalleled richness and diversity, as well as the tension and conflict, it has brought to world Christianity.

People of Paradox: A History of Mormon Culture |
People of Paradox: A History of Mormon Culture
Terryl L. Givens, "People of Paradox: A History of Mormon Culture" Oxford University Press (2007) | English | ISBN 0195167112 | 436 pages | PDF | 2.64 MB
In People of Paradox, Terryl Givens traces the rise and development of Mormon culture from the days of Joseph Smith in upstate New York, through Brigham Young's founding of the Territory of Deseret on the shores of Great Salt Lake, to the spread of the Latter-Day Saints around the globe. Throughout the last century and a half, Givens notes, distinctive traditions have emerged among the Latter-Day Saints, shaped by dynamic tensions--or paradoxes--that give Mormon cultural expression much of its vitality. Here is a religion shaped by a rigid authoritarian hierarchy and radical individualism; by prophetic certainty and a celebration of learning and intellectual investigation; by existence in exile and a yearning for integration and acceptance by the larger world. Givens divides Mormon history into two periods, separated by the renunciation of polygamy in 1890. In each, he explores the life of the mind, the emphasis on education, the importance of architecture and urban planning (so apparent in Salt Lake City and Mormon temples around the world), and Mormon accomplishments in music and dance, theater, film, literature, and the visual arts. He situates such cultural practices in the context of the society of the larger nation and, in more recent years, the world. Today, he observes, only fourteen percent of Mormon believers live in the United States. Mormonism has never been more prominent in public life. But there is a rich inner life beneath the public surface, one deftly captured in this sympathetic, nuanced account by a leading authority on Mormon history and thought.

Talal Asad, "On Suicide Bombing" |
Talal Asad, "On Suicide Bombing"
Talal Asad, "On Suicide Bombing" Columbia University Press (2007) | English | ISBN 0231141521 | 142 pages | PDF | 1.59 MB
Like many people in America and around the world, Talal Asad experienced the events of September 11, 2001, largely through the media and the emotional response of others. For many non-Muslims, "the suicide bomber" quickly became the icon of "an Islamic culture of death"—a conceptual leap that struck Asad as problematic. Is there a "religiously-motivated terrorism?" If so, how does it differ from other cruelties? What makes its motivation "religious"? Where does it stand in relation to other forms of collective violence?

An Introduction to Catholic Social Thought |
An Introduction to Catholic Social Thought
Michael P. Hornsby-Smith, "An Introduction to Catholic Social Thought" Cambridge University Press (2006) | English | ISBN: 0521681995 | 405 pages | PDF | 2.93 MB
Michael Hornsby-Smith offers an overview of Catholic social thought particularly in recent decades. While drawing on official teaching such as papal encyclicals and the pastoral letters of bishops' conferences, he takes seriously the need for dialogue with secular thought. The book is organized in four stages. Part I outlines the variety of domestic and international injustices and seeks to offer a social analysis of the causes of these injustices. Part II offers a theological reflection on the characteristics of the kingdom of God which Christians are urged to seek. Part III reviews Catholic social thought in six main areas: human rights, the family and bioethical issues, economic life, social exclusion, authentic development, and war and peace. Part IV completes the cycle with a consideration of appropriate social action responses to the injustices which the author has identified and analysed.

The First Muslims: History and Memory |
The First Muslims: History and Memory
Asma Afsaruddin, "The First Muslims: History and Memory" Oneworld Publications (2007) | English | ISBN 1851685189 | 278 pages | PDF | 1.33 MB
The First Muslims reconstructs the first century of Islam to offer a fascinating exploration of the origins and development of the religion. Using a wealth of classical Arabic sources, it chronicles the lives of the Prophet Muhammad, his Companions, and the subsequent two generations of Muslims, together known as the "Pious Forbears". Focusing on both the people and their beliefs, Afsaruddin presents a critical examination of the continuing influence of these first Muslims in contemporary times as figureheads for a variety of causes, from liberal Islam to hard-line "fundamentalism". Essential reading for anyone interested in the earliest history of Islam and its impact on Muslims today, this important book will captivate the general reader and student alike.

The Plain Truth About God |
The Plain Truth About God
From the Great Flood to the Legend of Atlantis, this book looks at the great truths and also the myths and legends that have shaped our lives. We examine the story of Jesus and Muhammad, the rise of Christianity and Islam, and the forces that have shaped our religions (Both East and West) over the centuries. First, I would like to say that this book is not in any way against God, or for that matter really about God at all. Rather it is about the human experience concerning God, and how we have taken the Divine and used it for our own ends.

A woman's guide to handy household items for use in self pleasure |
A woman's guide to handy household items for use in self pleasure
Tina Hess | Renaissance | ISBN: 1588733165 | 68 Pages | 1,6 Mb |
Being a fan of resourcefulness, anti-consumerism and DIY solutions, I enjoyed the premise of this e-book. A guide to re purposing household objects as sex toys is a great idea! Tina Hess offers a wide variety of great toy suggestions plus some bonus masturbation resources and household toy erotica, but I couldn't help but notice shortcomings in the areas of safety, positivity, and diversity. Hess says in the introduction that she began the book as something of a joke, but during her research realized that it could actually be important to support female sexuality by providing information and resources, The range of objects profiled in the Around-The-House Guide is quite wide
